How the math works

Cost per use is the price divided by lifetime uses, where lifetime uses are your uses per week multiplied by 52 weeks and by the years of lifespan you expect. Cost per year is the price divided by the lifespan. The ten-year total assumes you buy the item again at the end of each lifespan period inside the ten-year window, so a tool that lasts one year gets purchased ten times while a tool that lasts ten or more gets purchased once. In comparison mode, the break-even point is the first month at which the cheaper option’s cumulative spend, with a fresh purchase at the start and at each replacement, reaches or passes the durable option’s cumulative spend.

The model keeps four simplifications in the open: it counts 52 weeks in a year, it assumes replacement happens exactly at the stated lifespan, it ignores inflation and discounting, and it works in US dollars. Those are the same plain-assumptions rules we hold ourselves to in how we research every product, and they mean the output is an estimate for deciding, not an accounting record.

When cost per use misleads

Cost per use is only as honest as the usage number you feed it. The most common failure is optimism: a tool you imagine using daily but reach for twice a month has a cost per use many times higher than the calculator shows, and this is exactly the pattern where gimmick purchases hide. The number also says nothing about whether a tool earns its place.
